What does the Blue Flag mean for a beach?
The Blue Flag label is an international benchmark for sustainable tourism, environmental protection and the quality of tourist infrastructures. It rewards municipalities and marinas that are committed to an exemplary environmental development policy, particularly in terms of bathing water management, waste treatment and preservation of the natural environment. In France, the label is managed by Teragir (along with the Clef Verte label), a member of the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), the international organisation that coordinates the Blue Flag label worldwide.
A sustainable tourism development policy
Awarded each year for the summer period, this label guarantees holidaymakers a high level of quality and safety on the beaches, as well as a respected and enhanced environment. It is based on a precise set of standards, comprising general and technical criteria divided into a number of themes:
- Bathing water quality, regularly analysed
- Waste management and site cleanliness
- Accessibility and safety of facilities
- Informing the public about fauna, flora and sensitive natural areas
- Setting up environmental awareness activities
- Involvement of local players in a demanding, ongoing certification process
The label also applies to marinas, which must meet specific criteria relating to wastewater management, port safety, welcoming yachtsmen and preserving the coastline. Some sites are even integrating sustainable tourist excursion activities, such as cetacean watching, which is carried out with strict respect for marine fauna. For the first time in France, a boat has been awarded the Blue Flag label. The boat in question is Explore Océan, based in Hendaye in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region of France.
This label is much more than just a banner: it's a concrete commitment to biodiversity, local quality of life and responsible tourism, for residents and visitors alike.
What symbol does the blue flag represent?
The Blue Flag is symbolised by a blue flag adorned with a white circle containing a stylised wave. This logo represents the exemplary environmental quality of the beaches or ports that display it.
Which beaches have the Blue Flag in 2024? And where can you stay to enjoy them?
In 2024, 398 beaches in 186 French cities were awarded the Blue Flag label. These certified sites can be found by the sea, lake or river, throughout France.
