Explore the harbour and the centre of Pornic
Situated on the Côte de Jade, Pornic is a seaside resort that has retained the charm of its old harbour. The old harbour, nestled at the head of the Ria de Pornic, forms the heart of the town. It’s lovely to stroll around there and soak up the lively atmosphere of the quays, boats and outdoor cafés, before heading into the narrow streets of the town centre.
As you make your way back towards the centre, you’ll discover a town with many different faces, featuring a mix of old houses, seaside villas and more contemporary neighbourhoods. The Gourmalon district, with its elegant Belle Époque villas, bears particular witness to Pornic’s development as a seaside resort from the 19th century onwards.
Pornic Castle
Overlooking the old harbour, Pornic Castle is one of the town’s landmarks. Its towers and ramparts are a reminder of its medieval past and give it a silhouette that is particularly recognisable from the quays. Built from the 13th century onwards and remodelled over the centuries, it is now privately owned and not open to the public. Its location, however, means it can be admired from various points around the town.
The Noëveillard Lighthouse
At the entrance to La Noëveillard harbour, the Noëveillard Lighthouse is one of the iconic landmarks of the Pornic coastline. Built in 1845, it still guides boats into the harbour. From the coastal path, you can enjoy a lovely view of the lighthouse, the harbour and the rocky coastline. It is also a good starting point for continuing your walk along the Pornic coastline.
A seaside resort combining wellness and leisure
Pornic also boasts a range of facilities that contribute to its appeal as a holiday destination. The Pornic casino, situated overlooking the sea, offers games and entertainment. On the foreshore, you’ll also notice the wooden jetties leading to the large nets of the traditional fishermen’s huts – a distinctive feature of the coastline to discover as you stroll along.
La Bernerie-en-Retz
About ten kilometres from Pornic, La Bernerie-en-Retz is a small seaside resort popular for its large beach with facilities and swimming lake. At low tide, the coast is also ideal for shellfish gathering. The town centre and the seafront make it easy to extend your walk.
Les Moutiers-en-Retz
To the south of La Bernerie-en-Retz, Les Moutiers-en-Retz offers another side to the Côte de Jade, combining coastline, beaches and marshes. The town is particularly worth a visit to explore the Lyarne marsh, a natural area situated between land and sea, and to enjoy its surroundings, which are ideal for walks.
Préfailles and Pointe Saint-Gildas
Heading west, Préfailles charms visitors with its more indented coastline. Pointe Saint-Gildas, which marks the very tip of the town, offers stunning panoramic views of the ocean and the Loire estuary. The coastal path allows you to explore the rocky landscapes of this part of the Côte de Jade.
La Plaine-sur-Mer and Saint-Michel-Chef-Chef
Further north, La Plaine-sur-Mer and Saint-Michel-Chef-Chef offer the chance to continue exploring the coastline. Beaches, coves and small harbours dot the coast, whilst the hinterland offers a more rural setting. Saint-Michel-Chef-Chef is also known for its galettes Saint-Michel, a speciality that forms part of the town’s culinary history.

Enjoy the beaches and the coastline
With its many beaches and coves, Pornic offers plenty of opportunities to enjoy the seaside whilst on holiday. Swimming, relaxing or strolling along the water’s edge provide a variety of pleasures, whilst the customs officers’ path offers beautiful views of the coast.
At low tide, the foreshore reveals a whole new world and is a great place to try your hand at shellfish gathering, a popular activity for families. However, you should observe the permitted times, sizes and quantities, as well as any local restrictions.

The Princé Forest is also a lovely place for a walk, whilst the Jardin des Îles Enchantées offers a more unusual experience.
The Pays de Retz also boasts a rich Neolithic heritage. Dolmens, menhirs, burial mounds and remarkable stones bear witness to this ancient presence and dot the landscape. Heading back towards the estuary, the south bank of the Loire retains more unspoilt landscapes, allowing you to extend your exploration well beyond the coast.
