Booking camping accommodation is not just a matter of choosing a date and destination. To avoid disappointment and enjoy a peaceful holiday, it is important to find out about the condition of the accommodation, the services offered and the options available.

Campsite owners' obligation to provide information

The decree of 22 October 2008 states that campsite owners must provide their customers with a written description before the rental. In particular, they must indicate:

  • a detailed description of the accommodation (size, layout, year of construction)
  • the location of the accommodation in the locality and within the campsite
  • the facilities and services included or available at an additional cost (dishwasher, television, linen, children's options, etc.)
  • the rental conditions and the price of additional services

This obligation is intended to ensure transparency and enable holidaymakers to make an informed decision before booking. It also helps to avoid unpleasant surprises and disappointment on arrival at the campsite!

Before confirming your booking, here are the main points to check and questions to ask:

What to ask about your accommodation:

The size and location of the accommodation

Find out about the size of the pitch and the layout of the accommodation. Campsites rated 1 to 5 stars offer pitches averaging 90 to 100 m², but this can vary. This information is important if you are travelling with a tent or motorhome, or if you want enough space to enjoy the outdoors and park a vehicle. Also find out about the location of your rental or pitch within the campsite, depending on whether you prefer to be in a quiet area or close to entertainment, water parks, etc.

The terrace or garden furniture

Find out if there is a terrace and if it is covered. Also ask if garden furniture is provided (especially if you have sun loungers for relaxing). These amenities are essential for making the most of the outdoors, especially with family or friends.

Amenities provided

Ask what equipment is included in the accommodation. This includes the kitchen (fridge, hob, microwave, dishwasher, coffee maker or coffee machine), bathroom (shower, toilet), heating or air conditioning, television and Wi-Fi access. Some campsites also offer additional equipment for hire, such as refrigerators, baby kits or televisions. Checking these points will ensure you don't find yourself without the comforts you expect.

Provision of sheets and towels

Most campsites do not provide sheets, towels and tea towels, so you will need to bring your own or hire them on site, but be aware that not all campsites offer this service. Ask specifically what is included in terms of household linen.

The age of the mobile home

Ask how old the mobile home is. Some campsites include this information in their description, which can help you assess the comfort and maintenance of the accommodation.

The possibility of pitching a tent next to the mobile home

If you plan to pitch a tent next to the mobile home (particularly to accommodate your teenager, who wants their autonomy), find out about the campsite's policy on this. Some establishments allow this, while others do not. It is important to check this information to avoid disappointment on arrival.

What to ask about the campsite:

Catering options: snack bar, restaurant, mini-market

If you plan to take advantage of the campsite's services, ask if there is a snack bar, restaurant, grocery store or bread depot available. Also ask about opening hours and the possibility of ordering takeaway meals. This will allow you to plan your meals and tailor your stay to your needs.

Accessibility and specific services

If you or a member of your family has special needs, check the campsite's accessibility: access ramps, adapted sanitary facilities, reserved pitches. Some establishments also offer the hire of specific equipment or services adapted to people with reduced mobility.

Activities and entertainment

Find out about the activities and entertainment on offer: kids' clubs, mini clubs, theme nights, shows, sports classes or wellness workshops. This will help you plan your days and choose a campsite that suits everyone's needs, young and old alike.

Environmental commitment

If you want to stay at an environmentally friendly campsite, ask which eco-labels are present, such as Clef Verte or European Ecolabel. These labels guarantee sustainable practices, such as water management, waste sorting and the use of renewable energy, contributing to a more responsible stay.

What to ask about your booking:

Booking conditions

Before booking, check the amount of the booking fee and the one of the deposit or down payment and the payment terms. Some campsites apply additional charges for tourist tax or ancillary services (such as compulsory cleaning). Knowing this information will help you avoid surprises and keep your budget under control.

Cancellation policy

Find out about the cancellation policy (dates, amount due in case of cancellation) to determine whether you need cancellation insurance. Just in case...

What about your pet?

If you are travelling with a dog or other animal, find out about the campsite's policy on pets. Some campsites accept all animals, while others impose restrictions (size, number, prohibited breeds) or additional fees. Checking this information in advance will help you avoid any surprises and organise your stay with your four-legged friend with peace of mind.

In summary: Before booking, take the time to ask all the necessary questions about accommodation, services, additional options and environmental commitments. Checking this information will allow you to plan a comfortable stay, without any unpleasant surprises, and to fully enjoy your camping holiday.
