Booking fees: what you need to know when booking at a campsite

When booking a campsite, the advertised price does not always include all the expenses you can expect to incur. Between booking fees, tourist tax and deposits or down payments, it is best to know these various costs in advance to avoid unpleasant surprises and plan your holiday budget with peace of mind.

The booking fee for your campsite reservation

Why are there booking fees?

You are asked to pay the booking fee when you make your reservation. This fee allows the campsite to process your booking and take care of the administrative side of things.

If you arrive without a booking, these fees do not apply, but there is no guarantee that you will find a pitch or rental accommodation available: for a stay in high season, it is best to book in advance, and well in advance. Seaside resorts and other major tourist destinations are usually fully booked in July and August.

How much are the booking fees?

Booking fees are still widely charged when booking a pitch or rental accommodation. The average amount of these fees generally varies between €3 and €30 per stay, depending on the category of campsite, the period and the type of accommodation booked. They are usually non-refundable, even in the event of cancellation, unless otherwise stated in the booking conditions.

However, some campsites may offer free booking fees, particularly for early bookings, during certain off-peak periods or as a promotional offer. It is therefore important to check the exact amount carefully in the booking conditions and to compare prices if you are hesitating between several establishments.

What you need to remember about booking fees

  • Always check the exact amount of the booking fee in the booking conditions.
  • Compare the amounts between different campsites if you are on a tight budget.
  • Be on the lookout for promotions that can save you these fees.

Other fees

Tourist tax

Tourist tax is a local tax that you must pay in addition to the cost of booking your pitch or rental accommodation.

The amount varies depending on the municipality, the category of the campsite and the type of accommodation. It must be paid per day and per number of people occupying the accommodation.

It is collected directly by the campsite at the time of your stay and should be included in your holiday budget.

Deposits and advance payments

When you make your booking, the campsite may ask for a deposit or down payment:

Deposit: allows you to secure your booking without having to pay the balance immediately. If you cancel, you may be able to recover some or all of the deposit, depending on the campsite's policy.

Down payments: commits both parties. In the event of cancellation, the amount paid may be partially or totally retained by the campsite.

In summary:

Before booking, take the time to check the booking fees, tourist tax and conditions relating to deposits or down payments. This will allow you to plan your budget, avoid surprises and enjoy your camping holiday to the full.
