Before choosing your campsite

Cancellation insurance: think about it when you book

The campsite is chosen. The dates, the accommodation and the various options are also chosen. You are going to pay for all or part of the stay. This is when a small box appears to encourage you to take out cancellation insurance. The temptation is great not to do so. However, a moment's reflection is in order.

Cancellation insurance allows the customer to be reimbursed for his financial commitment if he has to cancel his stay at a campsite, for very specific reasons. The standard basic contract includes a "pre-stay" cancellation insurance policy that covers you from the time of booking until your arrival at the campsite. It can, if necessary, be combined with one or more extensions such as "interruption of stay" or "delayed arrival" which will allow you to be reimbursed for the part not used.

How much does it cost?

In a rental contract, whether for a camping pitch or rental accommodation, the insurance is usually a percentage (between 3 and 5% on average) of the total amount of the rental, which represents an additional cost of about 10 to 15 € per week for an accommodation and about 10 € for a bare pitch (often for the duration of the stay)

In what cases?

Trying to get a refund because you have changed your mind about your destination is unlikely to be successful. For a cancellation to be covered by insurance, there must be specific reasons for it. Although there are variations from one insurer to another, here are the most commonly accepted.

- Death or temporary or permanent disability

- Serious property damage to your home

- Pregnancy complication

- Your call for an organ transplant

- An accident or breakdown of your means of transport

- Economic dismissal

- Getting a job

- Serious damage to your vehicle

- A contraindication to vaccination

- Changes to your leave dates by the employer

- Your summons to court

- Refusal of a tourist visa

- Theft of your identity papers

- Your professional transfer

- Your call for an adoption

- Your mental or depressive illness

- Ban on camping following a natural disaster
