What to see in France

Camp in the middle of the Corbières

In Occitania, the limestone hills and plateaux of the Corbières extend around Narbonne, Limoux and Carcassonne. Between the Pyrenees and the Massif Central, this magnificent and rather wild universe is mostly located in the department of Aude, but with a part in the Pyrénées-Orientales.

If you are looking for warmth and light for your holiday, enjoy the Mediterranean climate here, very dry and sunny, tempered by the breath of the Tramontane. Like the Orbieu, the rivers that meander through the Corbières massif, offer you freshness and spectacular gorges on the side of the Aude, Galamus, Termenet, Gouleyrous, or Coyenemont. As well as the Limousis cave and the Cabrespine chasm, on the way to the Minervois.

In this environment of garrigues, you will encounter some peaks that rarely exceed a thousand metres in altitude, culminating in the peak of Bugarach (1,231 m), with the white peaks of the Pyrenees on the horizon. Behind the Montagne d'Alaric, beautiful state forests welcome you to the southern part of the Corbières, in the direction of Fenouillèdes. The Corbières are particularly rich in prehistoric discoveries, the most beautiful of which can be seen in the large prehistory museum in Tautavel.

Cathar abbeys and castles

Clinging to strategic rocky peaks, admire the numerous medieval Cathar fortresses, which can be seen from far away: such as Termes, Quéribus, Aguilar, Puilaurens, or Peyrepertuse. The historic abbeys of Lagrasse, Fontfroide, Rieunette, Saint-Hilaire and Alet-les-Bains have greatly contributed to the influence of the Corbières.

Wines of the Corbières

Omnipresent in the landscape and patiently developed by the Romans, then the monks of the medieval abbeys, the vines of the Corbières produce fruity and colourful wines, but with different characters depending on the soil and the exposure of the 11 terroirs of the appellation and more than 1,300 producers.

Charming villages

Among the beautiful villages, some of which are circular, linger at Termes, Montjoi, Cucugnan, Fabrezan, Capendu, Fontjoncouse, Durban-Corbières, Villerouge-Termenès. Without forgetting of course the visit of the fortified city of Carcassonne with its double enclosure defended by 52 towers and 3 km of ramparts, where the Saint-Hilaire basilica nestles. Less than 30 km further south, in the middle of the vineyards producing the famous blanquette, Limoux has preserved its effervescence and medieval soul.
