A fortress built to defend Brittany
Fougères Castle dates back to around the year 1000, constructed as a strategic point to monitor the borders of the Duchy of Brittany against Norman and Angevin powers. Its position on a rocky spur, surrounded by marshes and the Nançon River, made it almost impregnable from the start, designed to protect the region from invasions and wars.
Unique open-air architecture
What immediately impresses at Fougères are its numerous massive towers and majestic ramparts. The fortress once had three successive enclosures:
- A first defensive wall close to the town,
- A lower courtyard dedicated to daily life and serving as a refuge for the population,
- An upper courtyard around the keep, the true strategic heart.
Despite centuries and wars, the towers and curtain walls still rise majestically today. The local granite walls tell the long saga of medieval military techniques, a true legacy for history buffs, architecture enthusiasts, and lovers of ancient weaponry.
Centuries of life and transformation
Over time, the castle has changed roles:
- From a seigneurial residence and strategic stronghold,
- To a prison in the 18th century,
- And finally to a tourist site open to the public from the late 19th century, after its acquisition by the municipality of Fougères.
Restoration campaigns and archaeological excavations have revealed the remains of the lordly residence, offering today a captivating scenographic visit that traces the fortress’s evolution and life through the ages.
