Ready for a tour of La Flotte?
The marina is the heart of the village of La Flotte. It is even said that all the town's appeal is concentrated in this undeniably charming spot. Created by Gabriel Sénac in 1765 for maritime trade, it is now a stopover for pleasure boats. This is where the restaurants and ice-cream parlours are located, and where village events such as concerts are organized. In fact, it's the focal point, as it's also where you'll find the night market during the summer season.
Built in the 17th century, the medieval-inspired market is a highly attractive and emblematic feature of the Ile de Ré. You'll find many and local producers set up on the cobblestones of its superb courtyard. Set up there between 9am and 1pm every day, they offer you the very best local produce. It's the ideal place to buy excellent oysters, indulge in a pastry or admire the cheese display. There's nothing better than sitting on the terrace of a café to feel the atmosphere of the market and admire the colors that emanate from it.
Listed as a historic monument, the Abbey of Notre-Dame-de-Ré, more commonly known as the Abbey of the Châteliers, was a Cistercian monastery in the 12th century, which unfortunately came under attack during the Wars of Religion. Now in ruins, the complex is the oldest religious building on the whole of the Ile de Ré. Fortunately, the remains are still magnificent, especially after being restored 25 years ago, and provide an instant glimpse back into the Middle Ages. The Abbaye des Châteliers is a must-see monument in the village of La Flotte.
The oldest parts of Sainte-Catherine-d'Alexandrie church, commonly known as Sainte-Catherine, date from the 15th century and have undergone several transformations over the centuries, including the raising of its bell tower. The stained-glass windows and portal have been listed as historic monuments for almost 40 years. The bell, which dates to 1632 and was a gift from Cardinal de Richelieu, is also worth a look.
The only beach in La Flotte, Plage de l'Arnérault is perfectly placed, close to the center. Ideal for families, the cove-shaped beach offers safe swimming and is very well sheltered. Accessible to people with reduced mobility, it is around 500 meters long and offers an attractive walk along the seafront. The beach is supervised throughout the summer, and the water is subject to weekly health checks.
