What to see in France

Territoire de Belfort, camping at the gates of Alsace

Created from the arrondissement of Belfort and Alsace, the Territoire de Belfort was not officially created until 1922. It is part of the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region and was for a long time the smallest department in France. It is a place that has managed to turn its small size into an asset, as it is full of cultural and natural treasures, as shown by its many lakes, ponds and forests or the superb town of Belfort. Despite its limited number, camping remains the ideal accommodation to discover this welcoming little territory.

Campsites in the Belfort Territory

Only two campsites in the Territoire de Belfort welcome you to discover its treasures. The first one is located in Belfort itself, it is the campsite L'étang des Forges *** at the edge of a pond, it has an open air swimming pool and proposes sports activities as well as a mini-club for the children. The second campsite is the Lac de la Seigneurie *** in La Chapelle-sous-Rougement. It has an outdoor swimming pool, 110 pitches and 10 rentals and is situated 50 metres from a lake. All the comforts are available in these two campsites to spend a pleasant stay.

Straddling four departments, including the Territoire de Belfort, the Ballons des Vosges Regional Nature Park is one of the largest in France. Protected, it offers a natural and cultural heritage of great richness, with regard to the Grand Ballon d'Alsace and its 1424 metres of altitude, the highest summit among the 14 present on the site.

Belfort and its rich heritage

From its magnificent and invincible citadel (the work of Vauban), preserved since its history as a defensive city and its resistance to Prussia in 1870, Belfort is marked by its past. Passing through the ramparts, one enters the citadel or enters the old town and admires the Brisach Gate, beautifully decorated with the fleur-de-lis, symbol of royalty. The famous and superb Lion of Belfort classified as a Historic Monument and its 22 meters long pink sandstone, located at the foot of the citadel can not escape anyone. The exploration of the city continues with the Saint-Christophe cathedral and its pink sandstone from the 18th century, the Miotte tower, the remains of which offer a beautiful view of the Vosges, the Fine Arts museum and the Place de la Grande Fontaine.

The Malsaucy lake, a preserved green setting

With a superb stretch of water to enjoy in summer with 6,000 m2 of beach and supervised swimming between June and August, the Malsaucy lake attracts both sportsmen and nature lovers. Indeed, thanks to a path and an observatory from which you can admire the birds and listen to their songs, 49 animal species and 8 plant species are protected as part of the protection of biodiversity, which is why part of the lake is inaccessible. You can also take advantage of a number of water sports activities at the leisure centre, such as pedal boats, sailing or kayaking, and swimming is supervised between June and August. There is also mountain biking around the lake, archery, climbing and hiking. Finally, a rock festival is organised in July each year, Les Eurockéennes de Belfort.

The Sungau Belfortain, in the middle of nature

This is the ideal region for hikers in the Territoire de Belfort, with the Francovélosuisse, a greenway that goes all the way to Switzerland for those who enjoy cycling. Located in the south of the department, you will find the characteristics of Alsatian and Swiss houses, colourful and timber-framed. It is an important fish farming area with many ponds, and there are also many mills, the most famous of which is the one in the village of Courtelevant. There are several villages to see here, such as Dell, located 25 km from Belfort, whose charm and varied historical heritage attract many tourists. The village of Dell is also one of the villages awarded the Ville et Village fleuris, as are 70% of the villages in the whole department.

Other villages in bloom such as Rougegoutte, Bavilliers, Beaucourt, Valdoie, Recouvrance, Etueffont... are also part of the Route des Fleurs and of those that have obtained the precious label.
