Car-free camping: 100% pedestrian campsites in France

More and more holidaymakers are looking for car-free campsites, where children can run around freely and where peace and quiet replaces the noise of engines. Although the concept is still in its infancy in France, it appeals because it is safe, environmentally friendly and peaceful.

However, it is important to note that not all so-called "pedestrian" campsites operate in the same way. Some are completely car-free, while others only offer pedestrian areas within a campsite that is accessible to vehicles.

Here's how to find your way around.

Completely pedestrianised campsites: 100% car-free

At a completely pedestrianised campsite, the rule is clear: no motor vehicle traffic on the paths during your stay.

Vehicles are parked in car parks located at the entrance or on the outskirts of the campsite. Depending on the establishment, it may be permitted to access your accommodation by car only on the day of arrival and departure, in order to drop off luggage, to transport people with reduced mobility or, of course, in cases of force majeure.

This requires specific organisation:

  • Dedicated, secure car parks (your car is on holiday too!)
  • Trolleys or electric carts may be available to transport shopping
  • Paths designed exclusively for pedestrians, bicycles and electric scooters.
  • Sometimes, internal electric shuttles can take you from one side of the campsite to the other.

Why choose a 100% pedestrian campsite?

The main advantage is safety, especially for young children who can move around freely without the risk of cars.

Another major benefit is peace and quiet. Without traffic, the atmosphere is more serene, evenings are less disturbed and the sound environment is more pleasant, far from slamming car doors, revving engines and loud radios.

Finally, this model is often part of a broader approach and offers concrete advantages:

  • Reduction of nuisance and pollution: exhaust fumes and dust remain in the car parks on the outskirts, preserving the air and green spaces.
  • Preservation of green spaces and reintroduction or protection of fragile ecosystems, such as coastal dunes, coastal marshes or wetlands rich in biodiversity.
  • Promotion of soft mobility: walking, cycling or electric scooters become the preferred modes of transport.

This gives your holiday a more "natural" and disconnected feel, close to the traditional spirit of camping.

Our selection of entirely pedestrian-only campsites

100% pedestrian campsites are still rare in France. Here are those that really operate without internal car traffic during your stay.

In Argelès-sur-Mer, the L'Hippocampe***** campsite covers around 4 hectares of wooded grounds, entirely designed without motor vehicle traffic. All pitches have been organised into pedestrian areas and vehicles remain parked at the entrance to the site. This ensures a calm and particularly safe environment for families. Also located in Argelès-sur-Mer, the Le Méditerranée Argelès***** campsite offers 5.5 hectares of wooded grounds with no cars on the paths. The setting is designed to offer a peaceful stay, with particular attention paid to tranquillity and freedom of movement for children.

In Vendée, in Saint-Jean-de-Monts, the Resort La Forêt**** campsite is entirely pedestrianised and has been awarded the Clef Verte label. Cars are parked in a dedicated car park, equipped with electric charging stations. Located between the ocean and the forest, the site focuses on a preserved environment and a gentler, more respectful holiday experience. In La Tranche-sur-Mer, the Le Bellevue*** campsite adopts the same principle, with no internal traffic in the alleys, thus reinforcing the family-friendly and peaceful atmosphere of the stay.

In the Landes region, the Lou Pignada***** campsite in Messanges offers a car-free concept, allowing guests to fully enjoy the natural and safe atmosphere, ideal for families and children. In Soturac, the Le Valenty*** nature campsite has also adopted a no internal traffic policy. Car access is only allowed on arrival and departure to drop off luggage. During your stay, vehicles are parked in a secure car park, and trolleys are available to help you transport your shopping.

In the Lot department, the La Clairière*** campsite in Lamothe-Fénelon and the Village du Port**** campsite on the banks of the Dordogne operate on a completely pedestrianised model in order to preserve the peace and quiet and immersion in nature. Vehicles are parked on the outskirts of the site.

Finally, in the Gard region, in Saint-Jean-du-Gard, Bivouac Nature** offers a resolutely nature-oriented and disconnecting approach, with no motor vehicle traffic inside the site.

Campsites with pedestrian areas

Not all "car-free" campsites are entirely pedestrianised.

In many establishments, only certain areas – often dedicated to recent or premium rentals – are designated as pedestrian areas, with secure, landscaped paths. Cars can circulate in other parts of the campsite or access traditional pitches.

How do pedestrian areas work?

The principle is generally as follows:

  • A specific area with no motor vehicle traffic
  • Parking in the immediate vicinity
  • Access permitted for unloading luggage
  • The rest of the campsite is accessible to vehicles

This model represents an interesting compromise: it allows guests to enjoy a quieter environment around their accommodation, while maintaining a flexible organisation for the entire site.

Many campsites have created entirely pedestrianised areas, especially in their premium sections. For example, at Les Mûres**** campsite in Grimaud, the new Premium area is designed for gentle and safe movement around the high-end mobile homes. At Au Bois des Biches**** campsite in Saint-Hilaire-de-Riez, several areas such as the Family and Garden areas encourage walking. Campsites such as Club Farret***** in Vias - with its Pacifique pedestrianised area - Le Berrua**** in Bidart and Les Sablons***** in Portiragnes also offer car-free areas around the accommodation.

Frequently asked questions about car-free campsites

Can you access your mobile home by car?

At most entirely pedestrianised campsites, car access is only permitted on the day of arrival and departure to drop off luggage. After that, vehicles must be parked in a dedicated car park.

How can I transport my luggage or shopping?

Most establishments provide trolleys or trailers. Some also offer internal electric shuttles.

Are pedestrian campsites more expensive?

Not necessarily. The price depends mainly on the location, the level of classification and the facilities. Being pedestrianised does not automatically mean a higher price.

Are car-free campsites suitable for people with reduced mobility?

It depends on the layout of the site. Some pedestrian campsites have wide, accessible paths, while others may be more natural and less suitable. It is advisable to check the specific facilities before booking.

A concept that is still rare, but growing

100% pedestrian campsites are still in the minority in France, but the trend is growing. Between the search for peace and quiet, increased safety for children and the desire to limit environmental impact, the model is attracting a growing number of holidaymakers.

Whether you choose a completely car-free campsite or a pedestrianised area, the goal remains the same: to enjoy a more peaceful holiday, where your holiday destination becomes a true place of relaxation.
