Weekend in the Bay of Arcachon: nature and the seaside

Situated on the Atlantic coast, just an hour from Bordeaux, the Bay of Arcachon is an ideal destination for a nature break between sea and pine forest. This multi-faceted region combines wild landscapes, local heritage and a relaxed atmosphere. Perfect for a weekend away for lovers, friends or family.

The best time to go

The Bay of Arcachon can be visited all year round, but each season has its own charms.

In spring, the mild temperatures and blossoming countryside provide the perfect backdrop for walks and visits to the oyster huts. In summer, there's plenty to do: lively beaches, markets, festivals and water sports are all on the agenda, although beware of the crowds. Autumn is a time of calm and magnificent colours, ideal for walks or boat trips. As for winter, it's a quieter time for those looking for a break from the crowds.

Day 1: Arcachon and the Dune du Pilat, between town and nature

Morning: Stroll around Arcachon and discover the Winter Town

Start your weekend with a stroll through Arcachon town centre. Walk along the beach, enjoy the morning light on the Thiers jetty, then lose yourself in the charming Ville d'Hiver, a historic district perched on the heights, renowned for its eclectic 19th-century villas. The Sainte-Cécile belvedere offers a magnificent view over the rooftops of Arcachon, the Basin and the Dune du Pilat in the distance.

Afternoon: Climb the Dune du Pilat and admire the sunset

In the afternoon, head for the Dune du Pilat, the highest dune in Europe. Climb up on foot (or use the stairs installed in season) and enjoy an exceptional panorama: on one side, the Landes forest; on the other, the Atlantic Ocean and the Banc d'Arguin. At the end of the day, stay for the sunset: the golden colours of the sand and ocean are an unforgettable sight.

Day 2: Oyster-farming villages and a trip to Cap Ferret

Morning: Discover the typical villages of the basin

Take a trip to the iconic oyster-farming villages of the Bay of Arcachon, such as L'Herbe, Le Canon and Piraillan. These hamlets, lined with colourful wooden huts, will immerse you in an authentic atmosphere. Here, time seems suspended between sandy lanes, maritime pines and traditional boats.

Afternoon: Oyster tasting and panoramic ocean views

Sit on the terrace in an oyster hut, your feet in the sand, and enjoy fresh oysters with a glass of local white wine. The atmosphere is simple and friendly, in keeping with the spirit of the basin. End your day with a stroll along the water's edge or a siesta in the shade of the pine trees.

Where to eat and drink?

The Basin is bursting with good addresses to suit all tastes.

For a refined dinner with a view, Le Patio in Arcachon is an excellent address: inventive, local cuisine in elegant surroundings. Another chic option: La Co(o)rniche, perched opposite the Dune du Pilat, combines gastronomy with a spectacular setting. La Baraque à Huîtres and Le Routioutiou offer a relaxed atmosphere and a warm welcome.

At the end of the evening, settle into the Bar du Grand Café Victoria in Arcachon for a cocktail in a chic, hushed setting.
