What to see in France

Camping in the Jura, a soothing experience

Château-Chalon dans le Jura
Château-Chalon dans le Jura

The Jura is part of the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region and takes its name from the Gallic word Juris which means "forest and mountain" which says a lot about the kind of landscape you can expect to see in this department. Between the immense forests, the numerous lakes and the listed sites, the Jura is ideal for a change of scenery and for breathing. A department that is perfectly suited to camping trips to make unforgettable memories.

Campsites in the Jura

Camping remains the perfect accommodation to discover the region. There are nearly 60 campsites in the Jura that will allow you to camp near the place you want to discover. By a lake, in the middle of the forest or near a listed site? With a swimming pool, entertainment for the children or more quiet? A luxury campsite or a more modest one? Here, your holiday starts with the choice of your accommodation.

Places not to be missed in the Jura

Bordered by the Doubs River, it is pleasant to stroll through the old streets of Dole to admire the old houses as much as to linger over a meal. The former capital of Franche-Comté, the Jura town has been classified as a Town of Art and History since 1992. To discover the town, follow the "chat perché" route, a reference to Marcel Aymé who lived in Dole as a child, to explore all the facets of the town at your own pace. The rue du Collège de l'Arc, the Collégiale Notre Dame and the Hôtel Dieu are emblematic sites. Finally, don't leave Dole without seeing the charming Canal des Tanneurs.

It is the salt water that has made Lons-le-Saunier, the prefecture of the Jura, an economic success with the curists. But it is also a very welcoming little tourist town, with an interesting heritage that houses the house of the legendary Vache Qui Rit. There you will learn its manufacturing secrets and everything you need to know about the famous red cow!

Classified as the most beautiful village in France, Baume-les-Messieurs is a spectacular site not to be missed when visiting the Jura. As well as Arbois, a charming village which represents an unmissable stopover on a tour of the Jura vineyards, and Château-Chalon which is the main stopover.

The Hérisson waterfalls are one of the unmissable stops in the Jura and even in Franche-Comté. Listed in the network of the Great Sites of France. They offer you, in all seasons, a fascinating natural spectacle of great beauty. They can be discovered by hiking and, in passing, allow you to explore some historical remains.

The place is perfect for a walk to the lake of Chalain and its sublime turquoise water. Nestled in the heart of the forest and surrounded by mountains, it is paradise that you will swim! There are three supervised beaches here in high season, as well as numerous water sports activities. And just for the pleasure of your eyes, go to the belvedere of Fontenu to admire this natural wonder.

The Pic de l'Aigle is a 993 metre high peak that offers an exceptional 360° view of the Jura mountain range and even the Mont Blanc if the weather is good. A longer hike will take you to the Belvédère des 4 Lacs where you will be rewarded with a sublime view of the ever turquoise waters of the lakes.
