Poitiers, the city of a hundred bell towers

Once known as the "city of a hundred steeples", Poitiers is the former capital of the Poitou-Charentes region. It has a rich religious and architectural heritage, including the 11th and 12th century church of Notre-Dame-la-Grande, with its sculpted façade.

You should not miss the light shows that highlight the ancient facades of the building every evening in summer. Not to be missed. Wander through the many narrow streets to the small squares and marvel at the architecture of the townhouses and old houses.

For art lovers, the Musée Sainte-Croix houses fine art collections and the Musée Rupert de Chièvres exhibits old paintings and decorative arts.

A diversion to Châtellerault

Second only to Poitiers in the Vienne department, Châtellerault is a destination rich in heritage and history. Visitors are seduced by the diversity of its emblematic monuments, starting with the majestic Pont Henri IV, built in the 17th century and a true symbol of the town with its elegant arches spanning the Vienne. There's also the Gothic church of Saint-Jacques, which was an important stopover on the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela.

Châtellerault is also home to the Maison Descartes, where the famous philosopher spent part of his youth, and which has now been converted into an exhibition centre.

The Hôtel de Sully, a former 18th-century town house, is another of the town's architectural treasures.

As well as its monuments, Châtellerault offers a pleasant setting with its landscaped banks of the Vienne, its museums such as the Grand Atelier (formerly the Musée de l'Auto, Moto et Vélo), its shady parks and its lively market. With its mix of history, culture and nature, the town is a must-see for lovers of heritage and local discoveries.

Chauvigny, a medieval gem

The medieval town of Chauvigny, perched on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Vienne river, is one of Poitou's architectural treasures. Rich in exceptional heritage, it is an invitation to stroll along its cobbled streets, where every turn reveals an ancient façade, a vaulted passageway or a vestige of the past.

Among the must-sees is the imposing collegiate church of Saint-Pierre, a masterpiece of Romanesque art from the 12th century, renowned for the finesse of its sculpted capitals. The town also boasts a unique group of five fortified castles on the same promontory, bearing witness to an exceptional military and feudal past.

Like Poitiers, Chauvigny combines a medieval atmosphere, religious heritage and panoramic views, offering visitors a captivating immersion in the history of the Middle Ages.

The spa town of La Roche-Posay is renowned throughout France - and far beyond - for its specialised treatments for skin disorders, thanks to its thermal water with exceptional dermatological properties. Every year, thousands of people come here to treat eczema, psoriasis, scars and burns.

But La Roche-Posay is more than just a spa town: it's also a small town full of character, which has managed to preserve the traces of its rich past. You can admire an imposing medieval keep, the remains of an ancient fortress, and its fortified gateway with machicolations, a well-preserved example of the defensive architecture of the Middle Ages.

The perfectly manicured gardens of the spa park provide a soothing setting for a stroll.

Saint-Savin, a Vienne treasure

Situated in the commune of Saint-Savin, some forty kilometres east of Poitiers, the abbey of Saint-Savin-sur-Gartempe is a jewel in the crown of New Aquitaine's religious heritage. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is often referred to as the "Sistine Chapel of Romanesque art".

The abbey is home to the largest collection of magnificently preserved Romanesque frescoes in Europe. These 11th-century paintings, which cover the vaults of the nave, depict scenes from the Old Testament with exceptional narrative force and rich detail. The painted vault, 42 metres long, is impressive both for its size and for the freshness of its colours.

Around the building, the site also offers a modern interpretation centre, a peaceful cloister and a spiritual atmosphere conducive to contemplation. A major cultural stop-off for any stay in the Vienne.

Meet the primates

Finally, the Vallée des Singes, south of Poitiers, is a unique animal park in France, entirely devoted to primates. More than 350 monkeys, belonging to around thirty different species, live there in semi-liberty, in an environment designed to respect their well-being and natural behaviour.

There are no cages here: the animals live on vast plant-covered islands, separated from visitors by streams, allowing them to immerse themselves peacefully and respectfully. As you stroll along the park's paths, you'll come across pygmy marmosets, impressive gorillas and curious lemurs that don't hesitate to approach you.

It's an ideal place for a family outing, combining discovery, education about biodiversity and moments of relaxation in a green setting. La Vallée des Singes also raises awareness of the need to protect endangered species through its many conservation programmes.
