Saint-Jean-de-Monts, a seaside atmosphere

One is quickly struck by the contrast but also the balance between nature and urbanity of the city.

We start on foot, with a stroll along the sea esplanade and then up to the famous pier which runs for 400 metres on the water. The immensity of the natural areas with 8 kilometres of beach is not to be missed. We continue our walk on the dune path, in the middle of an endless vegetation and a sublime panorama on the ocean.

The town offers to discover the environment while having fun with orientation courses as well as a visit to the "coastal and forest awareness" site. An activity to do with children to combine fun and education.

To continue with this ecological approach, the town offers several campsites that have obtained the Green Key label and which guarantee to act in favour of the environment. If the ecological argument is important to you, choose the campsites La Forêt ****, Aux Cœurs Vendéens **** and Les Amiaux ****, which have this label.

The holiday season also includes culinary pleasures, so visit the market stalls of Saint-Jean-de-Monts to discover little-known Vendée specialities such as Rata de Margattes, a cuttlefish stew, Caillebottes, a dessert made from curdled milk, or Fionaïe, another traditional Vendée dessert often served with brioche.

Finally, Saint-Jean-de-Monts is the ideal place to get away from it all and discover the most beautiful islands of the Vendée by boat, the island of Yeu and the island of Noirmoutier.

The natural and preserved landscape of Saint-Hilaire-de-Riez

A few kilometres south of Saint-Jean-de-Monts is the longest beach in the Vendée, that of Saint-Hilaire-de-Riez, 10 kilometres of fine sand bordered by dunes. Here you can enjoy the beauty of the ocean and its beach, the calm of the forest and the marshes, typical of the region. For your holidays, there are around forty campsites in Saint-Hilaire-de-Riez.

The forest, made up of maritime pines, is essential here to retain the sand of the dunes. It is currently 25 kilometres long and runs from the town of Fromentine in the north of the Vendée to Saint-Hilaire.

Saint-Hilaire-de-Riez defines its beaches as "clean and alive" and explains to tourists that they should be taken care of as they form, together with the dunes and the forest, a real barrier against the storms and floods that the region has experienced in recent years.

As far as activities are concerned, you should know that several nautical bases located on natural sites are ideal for the practice of sports such as sea kayaking, Optimist to introduce children to sailing, windsurfing or dinghy sailing. Something for the whole family.

In addition, quality cycle paths as well as mountain bike and walking routes are available to enable walkers to discover the 300 hectares of salt marshes as well as the freshwater plots, not forgetting the 600 hectares of state-owned forest.

And then, one cannot talk about the Vendée without mentioning the Corniche Vendéenne. No, it's not a variety of brioche, but it's the name given to what remains of an ancient island (the island of Riée) that can be seen in the Sion district and along 3 kilometres of rocky coastline. While walking along the cornice you may see common terns, also known as sea swallows, between April and September, or the maritime mugwort, a plant species that you will have to be content with smelling since its species is protected. It can be recognised by its silvery leaves and its strong smell.

You should also know that the town of Saint-Hilaire-de-Riez obtained the Family Plus label in 2015. This label favours the family with entertainment, rates adapted to each age, shops and services close to you and children who are looked after and pampered.

The city was awarded in 2013 for its commitment to a policy of reducing light pollution from public lighting. Five years later, it is continuing its efforts to protect the environment and save energy.image
