Castle of the Dukes of Brittany in Nantes: History, Museum, and Visit

Château des ducs de Bretagne
Château des ducs de Bretagne

In the heart of the city of Nantes, the Castle of the Dukes of Brittany stands as a remarkable witness to Breton and French history. Built at the end of the 15th century by Francis II, the last independent Duke of Brittany, it rises on the remains of a Gallo-Roman wall that is still visible today. Classified as a historic monument since 1840, the castle has become an iconic symbol of Nantes.

History of the Castle of the Dukes of Brittany

Originally, the castle had a major defensive function, protecting the city and the ducal court from external threats. However, with the marriages of Anne of Brittany to the French kings Charles VIII and Louis XII, the castle gradually lost its military role and became a sumptuous residence. The new queen called upon Renaissance architects to embellish the castle with finely carved dormer windows, elegant loggias, and decorative coats of arms, transforming the fortress into a true palace worthy of a queen of France.

In the 16th and 17th centuries, the Castle of the Dukes of Brittany became the Breton residence of the French sovereigns before being converted into a barracks, then a military arsenal, and later a prison. A darker chapter in its history occurred during the Occupation when the Germans built a bunker on the site, reminding visitors of the fragility of past eras.notably the two world wars, the Atlantic slave trade and slavery...
