What to see in France

Fortress of Salses

The fortress of Salses, located in the Pyrénées-Orientales, is a beautiful and unique example of military architecture, between a fortified castle and a modern bastion.

Visit the fortress of Salses during your camping holiday

The Spanish built it in the 15th century to block the access of the Roussillon (former Catalan border) to France. The fortress, located in the commune of Salses-le-Château, in the Pyrénées-Orientales, combines medieval defence elements (towers, keep, successive modern enclosures) and elements of bastioned architecture better adapted to artillery fire (wide ditch filled with earth, hummocky stones) which were added by Vauban in 1691.
