The monumental complex of Narbonne is a remarkable heritage site located in the historic centre of Narbonne, in the department of Aude (Occitanie). It is one of the must-see sites for anyone wishing to discover the history, architecture and art of this ancient Roman city.

Discover the Narbonne monumental complex during your camping holiday

Narbonne, founded in 118 BC, is one of the oldest Roman colonies in Gaul, a true commercial and strategic crossroads between Italy and Spain.

Built in the 13th century, the complex is a well-preserved example of southern Gothic architecture and the evolution of styles over the centuries.

The monumental complex of Narbonne includes:

  • The Palais-Musée des Archevêques: a former episcopal palace that was both a residence and a fortress, it now houses art and archaeology collections as well as exhibition spaces.
  • The Cathedral of Saint Just and Saint Pasteur: a 13th-century Gothic masterpiece, it is remarkable in particular because it was never completed, comprising only the choir built between the end of the 13th and the beginning of the 14th century.
  • The Gilles Aycelin keep: a fortified tower of the palace offering a panoramic view of Narbonne after climbing its 162 steps. At the top, as a reward, is a superb view of Narbonne.
  • The remains of the Via Domitia: a visible section of the oldest Roman road in Gaul, dating from the 2nd century BC, discovered and restored under the Town Hall square; it allows visitors to walk on ancient cobblestones and appreciate the importance of this road that linked Italy to Spain.
  • The Archbishops' Garden: ideal for a relaxing break at the end of the visit, in a peaceful setting.
