Le musée Picasso d'Antibes

Perched on the ramparts of Antibes, the Picasso Museum is housed in the prestigious Château Grimaldi, a fortress steeped in history that was once a museum dedicated to the region’s history and archaeology. In 1946, Pablo Picasso set up his studio there, captivated by the Mediterranean light and the unique atmosphere of the place. Over the course of several months, the artist created a remarkable series of paintings, drawings and ceramics there, much of which he donated to the town. Today, the museum invites visitors to discover this particularly prolific period in Picasso’s career, whilst enjoying an exceptional setting with breathtaking views of the sea.

The history of the Picasso Museum in Antibes is closely linked to Pablo Picasso’s stay on the Côte d’Azur. In 1946, the artist settled for several months at Château Grimaldi, where he set up his studio. Inspired by the Mediterranean light, the landscapes of Antibes and the atmosphere of the place, he produced a significant series of works reflecting this particularly creative period of his career.

On his departure, Pablo Picasso presented the town of Antibes with an exceptional collection comprising twenty-three paintings and forty-four drawings. This prestigious donation led to the opening, on 22 September 1947, of the Picasso Gallery, situated on the first floor of Château Grimaldi. The works were then displayed in the west wing of the building, offering the public the first space entirely dedicated to the famous painter.

Over the decades, the Picasso Museum’s collections have grown considerably thanks to new acquisitions, donations and loans. Today, the museum houses one of the most significant collections of Picasso’s work in Europe, bringing together paintings, drawings, prints, sculptures and ceramics that trace the evolution of his art and his immense talent.

In 1966, to pay tribute to the artist and highlight the importance of his legacy in Antibes, the Château Grimaldi was officially renamed the Picasso Museum. In addition to Pablo Picasso’s works, the museum also offers a remarkable exhibition dedicated to modern and contemporary art. Visitors can admire works by major artists such as Yves Klein, Amedeo Modigliani, Francis Picabia, Joan Miró and Germaine Richier, making this a must-see during any stay in Antibes.
