Going on holiday in a tent remains a unique experience for enjoying nature to the full. In 2025, campsites will offer pitches to suit all needs, from standard pitches to luxury pitches with private bathrooms. Whether you're a fan of old-fashioned camping or looking for optimal comfort, discover our tips for choosing the ideal pitch according to your expectations, your budget and the size of your equipment.

Camping with the family in a tent

While some camping villages only offer rental accommodation (mobile homes, chalets, etc.), most establishments remain true to the spirit of traditional camping. You can pitch your tent on a bare pitch, sometimes even on 100% tent campsites with no permanent rentals. When looking for a campsite to pitch your family tent (or other accommodation), you'll find that you have a wide choice of destinations.

Camping in a tent rather than in rented accommodation means choosing freedom and closeness to nature. By taking the time to choose your pitch carefully, you'll be giving yourself the best chance of a successful holiday, whether you're looking for a minimalist, family-friendly or luxury experience.

Which tent should you choose for your camping trip?

Before booking your pitch, make sure you have a tent that suits your camping style. For a comfortable stay, choose a tent with a bedroom that is large enough (at least 60 cm wide per person) and, ideally, an awning to store your belongings out of the rain. Choose a model that is rainproof and well ventilated to limit condensation. Dome, tunnel or inflatable tent: the right choice depends on your equipment, the number of people and the level of comfort you want. Simplicity, storage space and ease of assembly should guide your decision.

Understanding tent pitches on campsites

Different types of tent pitches

Not all pitches are the same: depending on your needs and budget, you will find several levels of comfort.

  • Standard bare pitch: ideal for pitching a classic tent, it often includes a water point nearby and sometimes access to electricity.
  • Pitch with electricity: essential if you use a fridge, lamp or any other electrical appliance. The connection is often optional or included in 3-star campsites and above.
  • ‘Comfort’ pitch: in addition to electricity, this may include a water supply, waste water disposal and more space. Perfect for families or campers with a lot of equipment.
  • Premium or ‘grand comfort’ pitches: these high-end pitches offer more space and private facilities.

How big is a camping pitch for a tent?

The size of your pitch varies depending on the campsite's rating. 1- and 2-star sites offer pitches of at least 80 m², perfect for setting up a family tent with an awning.

3-, 4- and 5-star campsites offer larger pitches ranging from 89 to 114 m². These large spaces allow you to set up a real living area with a picnic table and shaded areas.

The little details that make all the difference on your pitch

Beyond the size and facilities, certain criteria can greatly influence your comfort. Find out about the exposure of the pitch (morning or afternoon sun), the type of ground (grass, sand, gravel) and the presence of natural shade, depending on whether the pitches are more or less shaded. The proximity of the sanitary facilities, swimming pool or playground can be an advantage for families, but a disadvantage for those seeking peace and quiet. Don't hesitate to consult the campsite map or ask for advice when booking.

Luxury options: pitches with private sanitary facilities

The premium pitches with private sanitary facilities are the epitome of modern camping. These spacious pitches, often exceeding 100 m², guarantee maximum privacy thanks to their carefully landscaped surroundings.

Your personal space includes a (small) private bathroom with shower, sink and toilet. Most facilities also offer an outdoor kitchen area equipped with a sink and sometimes even a refrigerator.

These high-end spaces are particularly suited to families looking for the perfect combination of outdoor living and optimal comfort. No more need to cross the campsite at night or wait to use the showers: everything is within easy reach on your pitch.

Comfort and services: essential facilities

The campsites' modern sanitary blocks have ultra-comfortable facilities with hot showers with adjustable temperature and family cubicles adapted to the needs of parents. The dishwashing and laundry areas make everyday life easier.

Access to drinking water is provided via distribution points strategically located throughout the site. The shared barbecue areas are ideal for socialising in the open air, while the recycling areas make it easy to dispose of waste responsibly, just like at home.

Finally, well-designed night lighting ensures you can move around the site safely at night.

How much does it cost to pitch a tent on a campsite?

Prices for pitches by the sea or on a campsite with a swimming pool in France

The 2025 rates for a tent pitch vary considerably along the French coast. A stay for two adults with electricity costs an average of £27.1 per night (30,1€). This average hides significant differences: expect to pay £14.1 at an unrated site, up to £54.6 per night at a 5-star establishment. This price will naturally vary depending on the type of pitch and its level of comfort.

The geographical location has a direct influence on the price. Popular destinations such as the French Riviera and the Basque coast have higher prices during the high season. Conversely, the less touristy areas of the Atlantic coast offer more affordable prices.

Booking a pitch: plan ahead to have more choice

To get the best pitches in high season, it is advisable to book several months in advance, especially for July and August. Some popular campsites are fully booked by spring. Check the booking conditions: more and more establishments offer flexible packages with free cancellation or changes at no extra cost up to a few days before arrival. Also remember to check the terms and conditions for paying deposits or down payments, which vary from one campsite to another.

Eco-friendly campsites: sleep in a tent while respecting nature

Respect for the environment is becoming an important factor for many campers. Some campsites are strongly committed to sustainable practices, such as responsible water management, car-free zones, low-energy LED lighting, enhanced waste sorting, dry toilets and solar power. These establishments, which often have the Clef Verte or Ecolabel certification, offer a balance between comfort, nature and environmental responsibility. Find out about their practices before booking for a more sustainable stay.

Other questions about renting a pitch for a tent

Where are you allowed to sleep in a tent?

The answer is: not just anywhere. In France, wild camping is strictly regulated by law. You are not allowed to pitch your tent wherever you like, particularly on beaches, in state-owned forests, nature parks or near historic monuments. To camp outside of designated areas, you must obtain written permission from the private landowner or refer to local regulations. The simplest, most legal and most comfortable solution is therefore to book a pitch at a campsite.

Can I book a pitch that is accessible to all?

Many campsites are equipped to better accommodate people with reduced mobility. Some pitches are located in the immediate vicinity of the PRM sanitary blocks and have stabilised ground to facilitate wheelchair access. If you or a relative have specific needs, please specify this when booking to ensure you are allocated a suitable pitch. This attention to detail ensures that you can enjoy the camping experience in the best possible conditions, without any constraints.

Can I rent a tent at a campsite?

Yes, more and more campsites offer pre-erected tents for hire. These may be ‘ready-to-camp’ tents, often equipped with beds, a dining area and sometimes electricity. Some are genuine lodge or safari tents, halfway between a canvas tent and a mobile home. This is an excellent option if you don't have a tent or want to travel light while still enjoying the camping experience. Can I book a pitch at a campsite for just one night?

Yes, this is usually possible, especially if you bring your own tent. Bare pitches are more readily available for one or two nights, even in high season, unlike mobile home rentals, which often require a minimum stay. If you are travelling on foot or by bike, many campsites with the Accueil Vélo label offer pitches that can be accessed without a reservation, sometimes at a reduced rate, with adapted services such as bike shelters, electric charging points and quick access to sanitary facilities. However, remember to let the campsite know when you will be arriving, especially if you plan to arrive late in the day.
