Serre-Ponçon Lake, one of the largest artificial lakes in Europe, forms a huge turquoise expanse nestled between the Hautes-Alpes and Alpes-de-Haute-Provence mountain ranges. Created by the dam in the 1960s, it has transformed an entire valley into a spectacular setting where the Alpine peaks literally plunge into the lake. Its sunny climate, beautiful panoramic views and variety of beaches make it a favourite destination for holidaymakers looking for cool water, water sports and outdoor activities.

The most beautiful places to swim

Serre-Ponçon is famous for its intense blue waters, which are ideal for swimming in summer. Among the most popular spots is Combettes Beach in Savines-le-Lac, which offers an accessible, family-friendly setting with unobstructed views of the surrounding mountains.

In Embrun, the lake's connected waterway remains a safe bet: swimming is supervised, there are plenty of facilities and the atmosphere is very friendly, making it an excellent choice for families.

Further south, Saint-Michel bay is undoubtedly the lake's most iconic site. From the beach, you can enjoy a unique view of the small Saint-Michel chapel, perched on its island in the middle of the water. It is one of the most photographed panoramas in Serre-Ponçon.

Other areas, such as Rousset Beach, appeal for their more natural and peaceful atmosphere, ideal for enjoying the lake away from the hustle and bustle. Saint-Vincent-les-Forts beach offers a calm, family-friendly setting for swimming, with breathtaking views of the mountains surrounding Lake Serre-Ponçon.

All activities on the lake

Serre-Ponçon is a huge playground for water sports enthusiasts. Sailing, paddleboarding, kayaking, wakeboarding or water skiing: all activities are possible thanks to the many bases around the lake. Electric boat hire also allows you to explore the wildest bays and admire the Saint-Michel chapel from the water. For a change of pace, several hiking trails offer panoramic views of the lake, particularly from the heights of Morgon or around Chorges. Curious holidaymakers can also discover the Muséoscope du Lac, dedicated to the history of the dam and the submerged villages, or visit Savines-le-Lac and Embrun, two lively towns in summer.

Practical tips for enjoying the lake

In summer, thermal winds can pick up in the afternoon, making the water more choppy: morning swims are often the most pleasant. The lake's depths increase rapidly, requiring particular vigilance with young children. Another point to bear in mind: the car parks around Savines-le-Lac and Baie Saint-Michel fill up quickly in high season. Finally, even though the sun is strong during the day, the water at Serre-Ponçon remains cool because it comes directly from mountain streams.
