4 km of fine sandy beaches with lifeguards

The Valras-Plage coastline stretches for 4 kilometres along a golden ribbon that includes the Plage des Mouettes, the Plage du Casino, the Plage Centrale and the Plage des Orpellières. These seaside areas, which have been awarded the Blue Flag for 25 years, benefit from optimum surveillance thanks to four strategically placed lifeguard posts manned by CRS lifeguards and fire-fighters from June to September.

A modern public address system broadcasts information on the weather and sea conditions, while specially adapted equipment such as rollators make access easier for people with reduced mobility. Every morning, the municipal services meticulously maintain these stretches of sand, creating an ideal setting for the free events that punctuate the summer, from outdoor fitness to sandcastle competitions.

There are three major events: 14 July, with a firework display fired from the harbour jetty, followed by a DJ night on the central beach; 29 June, for Saint Peter's Day; and 15 August, to celebrate the high point of the summer season.

A heritage to discover

The Casino Tranchant and its modern architecture

Facing the Mediterranean, the Casino Tranchant embodies the architectural renewal of Valras-Plage, with its contemporary lines and changing reflections on the façade. Completed in 2023, this daring development harmoniously blends glass and steel into an ensemble that converses with the marine horizon.

The building is part of an ambitious urban project that is redesigning the casino district. Its refined architecture contrasts delicately with the surrounding traditional villas, creating a successful transition between heritage and modernity.

Inside, the luminous spaces open out onto the sea through huge bay windows, offering a unique experience where gaming mingles with maritime panoramas. Suspended terraces extend this feeling of immersion in the Mediterranean landscape.

Belle Époque villas

The architectural heritage of Valras-Plage finds its most refined expression in its Belle Époque villas, privileged witnesses to the golden age of sea bathing. These elegant residences, built at the time of the creation of the railway line linking Béziers to the coast, feature ornately detailed facades and wrought-iron balconies with floral motifs.

The commune of Valras has carefully preserved these architectural gems from the early 20th century, particularly along the seafront, where magnificent examples of seaside architecture can be found. The mansard roofs, bow windows and colourful ceramics tell the story of an era when seaside holidaymaking became a way of life.

A discovery trail takes you on a tour of these emblematic villas, some of which still bear the evocative names chosen by the wealthy families of Béziers who built them as summer resorts.

The Palais de la Mer

The Palais de la Mer is the cultural heart of Valras-Plage, with its modular auditorium seating up to 800 spectators. This modern multicultural venue offers an eclectic programme of events throughout the year, from plays to concerts, as well as temporary exhibitions in its luminous hall.

Two conference rooms and a cinema equipped with a Dolby stereo surround sound system complete this versatile infrastructure. A bar with terrace offers a pleasant break between two shows, while emerging artists and established talents alike take to the stage to enchant the evenings in Valras.

What to see around Valras-Plage

The Orpellières dunes

Between land and sea lies the natural site of Les Orpellières, a veritable ecological jewel where the highest dunes in the French Mediterranean form an imposing landscape. This 170-hectare estate, owned by the Conservatoire du Littoral, boasts a spectacular 2.5-kilometre stretch of dunes dotted with salt meadows and lagoons.

Nature lovers will love the waymarked footpaths that wind their way through this unique ecosystem, offering exceptional views of the protected flora and fauna. The Maison de Site offers educational exhibitions and events to help visitors understand how the dunes were formed and observe emblematic species such as the oyat and the samphire.

Along the Avenue de la Méditerranée, local shops alternate with fashion and home decoration boutiques. A supermarket opens 7 days a week in season and several local mini markets make it easy for holidaymakers to stock up, while local craftspeople display their skills in the seafront art galleries.
