Visit the Loire

The second largest city in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, Saint-Etienne is close to Lyon and has been awarded the Ville d'Art et d'Histoire label. At the gateway to the Pilat Regional Park and famous for its football team, which continues to make the city shine, it has an important mining and industrial heritage. You should see the pretty kiosk on Place Jean Jaurès, stroll through the lively streets of the Saint-Jacques district and Place du Peuple, discover the Musée du Vieux Saint-Etienne, the Musée de la Mine and the prestigious Musée d'Art Moderne, which houses one of the most important collections of modern and contemporary art in France.

After visiting Saint-Etienne, let's continue on to the Pilat Regional Park. A site where sportsmen and nature lovers will be in their element with the crêt de la Perdrix which culminates at more than 1400 metres or the crêt de l'Oeillon which guarantees a magnificent view of the Alps and the Rhône valley. The Espace Eaux Vives of Saint-Pierre-de-Bœuf offers rafting and kayaking. An immense space with diverse landscapes. You can also discover traditional houses here, castles and villages such as Sainte-Croix-en-Jarez. Nestled in the heart of the park, and classified as one of the most beautiful villages in France, it is the only Carthusian monastery in France to have been transformed into a village during the Revolution. Two squares linked by a long alleyway with charming houses. Other surprises await you when visiting the village with a guide.

The gorges of the Loire are sumptuous rocky spurs, wooded and relaxing landscapes, exceptional fauna and flora, medieval castles and the lake of Grangent, a sublime water reservoir which extends over 28 kilometres where you can practice water sports but also embark on a boat for a cruise on the Loire. From the medieval fortress of Essalois, you will discover a beautiful panorama of the island of Grangent and its 12th century castle. From the medieval village of Chambles, a charming medieval village nestled on a granite promontory, you can enjoy a magnificent view of the Loire gorges.

Built in the 11th century, Couzan castle is a prestigious vestige of medieval military architecture. Its fortified enclosures and its keep have been preserved. Located in the commune of Sail-sous-Couzan, 60 kilometres north of Saint-Etienne, it is built on a hill and offers a beautiful view of the Forez mountains.
