The treasures of the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence

A sporting getaway in an exceptional natural site, the Verdon gorges are a must-see site in this department.

Tucked away in the hollow of the mountain, the village of Moustiers-Sainte-Marie is a real jewel built in the 5th century. Classified as one of the most beautiful villages in France, it is famous for its earthenware, of which the museum exhibits an important collection. Stroll through the narrow streets, stroll through the small squares, admire the facades of the houses and refresh yourself at the fountains of this quintessential Provencal village. The pretty Notre-Dame-de-Beauvoir chapel (262 steps to get there anyway) will offer you a magnificent view of the village's rooftops, you will have earned it!

An unusual fortified town thanks to its location on the edge of the Durance cluse, the Provençal town of Sisteron, facing the Baume rock, is considered the pearl of Haute-Provence. Former fortress of the Counts of Provence, the citadel offers a unique panorama of the Baume rock, the mountains and the banks of the river. If you are in Sisteron during the summer, and you like music, culture and dance, don't miss the Nuits de la Citadelle festival.

About ten kilometres south of Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, the Sainte-Croix lake is very popular during the summer season. With a surface area of 2000 hectares, turquoise blue in colour and bordered by several beaches, it is the largest lake in the Verdon and is ideal for water sports, relaxation and swimming. Around the lake, walking paths will make you spend another pleasant moment.

The Verdon Regional Nature Park is a territory full of natural treasures that will also appeal to lovers of old stones. Thanks to a large fauna and flora, you can see vultures, chamois and roe deer. Climbing, mountain biking, paragliding and white water sports can all be practised here, and there are almost 1000 kilometres of marked paths that run through the park for hiking enthusiasts, not to mention the grandiose and very diverse landscapes that it has in store for you.
