Russian Orthodox Cathedral of Nice

The Russian Cathedral of Saint Nicholas in Nice, in the Alpes-Maritimes, is considered the most beautiful Orthodox place of worship outside Russia.

Visit the Orthodox cathedral in Nice during your camping holiday

In 1903, the cathedral was built to accommodate the large Russian community living in Nice at that time. Its architecture, unusual in France, was inspired by the Moscow churches of the 16th and 17th centuries and attracted many tourists. The central dome is fifty-two metres high and is joined by four other small domes at each corner and two bell towers on the lower level. The bright green elements make the building glow in the sunlight, and its red brick walls stand out from the surrounding buildings. The Greek cross-shaped interior is richly decorated with woodwork, frescoes, bronzes and brass depicting holy scenes. The cathedral has a superb Russian-designed iconostasis (a wall covered with icons linking the sanctuary and the nave), the central part of which represents a triumphal arch to symbolise the glorious entry of Christ into the Kingdom of God.
