Perched on a rocky spur, the Château des Baux de Provence dominates the landscape. An ideal place for surveillance and defence, the site has always been coveted, from Antiquity to the Renaissance.

Visit the castle of Les Baux de Provence during your camping holiday

The Château des Baux de Provence is less than an hour away from the arena in Nîmes and the cities of Avignon and Arles.

In the Middle Ages the princes of Baux built a fortress here, and made it their main tool for controlling Provence, dominating more than 70 villages in the area. The Château des Baux is now in ruins. Of the power of the lords of Provence, a keep, two towers, and the remains of their medieval city, where we discover dovecotes, houses and chapels. You can also visit the castral chapel which symbolically protected the castle enclosure and the old mill of the city. At the entrance, the Brau tower, a beautiful construction from the end of the 15th century, houses a museum. Enormous siege machines (the largest is 16 metres high!), reconstructed from documents dating from the 13th century, allow you to understand the defensive methods of the time: to better understand, projectiles are fired in front of you, at a distance of over 200 metres. During the summer, workshops are offered at the castle for children where they discover the know-how of medieval craftsmen, while parents learn all about the weapons of the time and how they worked. The days with animations take place from 6 July to 29 August and from 23 to 31 October.
