This year, the city of Castres is taking you on an enchanted journey to the heart of the Venice Carnival. The must-see event of this month of March 2022 is the Venetian Carnival of Castres. Masked strolls, theatre and a grandiose show on the water are the order of the day.

Since 2006, the enthusiasts, grouped in an association: the Masqués Vénitiens de France, have been honouring the great tradition of the Venice Carnival. Adorned with sumptuous outfits and sublime masks, they are true works of art who walk gracefully in the manner of 18th century masked men. True ambassadors of Italian culture, these phantasmagorical mannequins take part every year in these events that celebrate Venetian culture.

For months, they imagined and created their costumes, with an incredible attention to detail and perfection. In order to faithfully represent the carnival of the City of the Doges, the costumers must obey a precise charter. Indeed, each masked person is obliged to remain silent but also to gracefully reproduce the gestures of the 18th century.

The Venetian Carnival originally dates back to the Middle Ages. At the time, it was a traditional festival mainly intended to maintain social and political cohesion between the different social classes in a commune marked by a strong popular identity. Over the years, it has been reserved more for the aristocracy. It is distinguished by a very particular refinement and the culture of mystery based on the mask and anonymity.

After an absence of two years, the Masqués, flag throwers, mimes and artists take possession of the streets and squares of the town for four days of conviviality and entertainment. The Carnival will open with the moment of grace of the flight of the angel who, flying over the magnificent decorations of the houses of the Agout, will come to give the key of the city to the Masqués and mark the beginning of the festivities. The Festa Sull'Acqua, unveils a new show, directly inspired by the Venetian tradition. The parade of boats takes visitors into a series of mysterious, offbeat and colourful worlds. Barges and animated tableaux follow one another, from universe to universe, on the banks of the Agout. An unforgettable moment where the reflections of the water provide a backdrop for the choreography, acrobatics, music and lights.image
