Combining freedom, nature and top-of-the-range comfort: that's what a 4-star campsite offers. Increasingly popular with holidaymakers looking for a quality experience without sacrificing their budget, these establishments offer a wealth of services, modern facilities and a friendly atmosphere.

But what does a 4-star rating really mean? What services does it guarantee? And how does it differ from a 5-star campsite? We take a look at the situation, before taking you on a tour of some not-to-be-missed destinations.

What does a 4-star campsite classification mean?

The classification of campsites in France is awarded by Atout France, the national tourism development agency. It is based on a grid of over 200 criteria, divided into several categories: quality of facilities, services offered, accessibility, hygiene, welcome, sustainable development, etc.

The criteria for a 4-star campsite

To obtain this distinction, a campsite must :

  • Providing a welcome in several languages
  • Quality sanitary facilities (hot water, heating, regular maintenance)
  • Offer spacious pitches of at least 80 m².
  • Maintaining impeccable cleanliness
  • Organising daytime and evening events
  • Providing a children's play area
  • Provide a range of additional services: grocery shop, restaurant, internet access, sports facilities, etc.

This classification is valid for 5 years and is subject to regular reassessment.

4 or 5 star campsites: what are the differences?

While 4-star campsites already guarantee an excellent level of comfort, 5-star campsites go even further with a top-of-the-range offer:

  • Reception open 24 hours in high season
  • Water park with several pools or wellness facilities (spa, hammam, jacuzzi)
  • Luxury accommodation, some of it very spacious or with premium facilities (private Jacuzzi, panoramic terraces, air conditioning...)
  • Personalised services: concierge, room service, private shuttles, sports coach, massages
  • Even larger pitches (minimum 100 m²)

Note: so-called "unusual" accommodation (safari tents, cabins, bubbles, etc.) can be found in all categories. What makes the difference in a 5-star establishment is the level of comfort and associated services.

To sum up: a 5-star campsite offers an ultra-premium experience, while a 4-star campsite remains an ideal compromise between nature, comfort and a controlled budget.

Choosing the right 4-star campsite: the right reflexes

Before you book, here are a few simple tips to help you find the 4-star campsite that's right for you:

  • Check the facilities: swimming pool, entertainment, catering, wellness areas, kids' clubs... not all 4-star campsites offer the same services.
  • Compare the accommodation available: some mobile homes or fully-equipped tents are newer, more spacious or better equipped than others.
  • Find out about the environment: proximity to the sea, a lake, a nature park or a charming village can enhance your stay.
  • Contact the campsite directly for any specific requests (accessibility, pets, baby equipment, etc.).

And above all... trust yourself! The general atmosphere of a place is often what turns a simple holiday into unforgettable memories.
