Discover Gordes

It was built on a rocky spur 340 metres above sea level because, in the Middle Ages, the inhabitants were forced to take refuge on high ground to protect themselves from the enemy during the Wars of Religion. The consequences of this strategy bore fruit during this period and then during the Renaissance.

Just stroll through the cobbled streets of Gordes and you'll be spoilt for choice. A village of postcard colours, its various viewpoints offer magnificent scenery over the valleys of the Lubéron Natural Park.

Listed as a historic monument in 1931, the Château de Gordes was first built over a thousand years ago. Subsequently destroyed, the building came back to life in 1525 with a less austere architecture than the first, including a superb listed fireplace in the Salle d'Honneur. The château is home to a permanent exhibition and other temporary exhibitions in the summer.

Saint-Firmin's church was originally built in the 12th century, but was rebuilt in the 18th century as an imposing fortress to accommodate a larger population. Extensive restoration work was carried out in 2017, and the magnificent murals and interior woodwork can now once again be admired.

Situated less than 5 km from the centre of Gordes, in the Sénancole valley, Notre-Dame de Sénanque Abbey was founded in 1148 on the territory of Gordes. A Cistercian monastery that is still in operation, and in the image of the men who lived there and built it, the abbey, which can be visited with a guide, was listed as a historic monument for the first time in 1921, then a second time for another part of the building in 1970. Its harmonious, uncluttered architecture is the beauty of the place, where a calm, peaceful atmosphere reigns.

Listed as a historic monument for almost 50 years, the Village des bories is a collection of dry-stone huts, the oldest of which date back to the 16th century. Once used for farming, the bories include enclosures, wine vats and sheepfolds, and today bear witness to the difficult life and work of a farmer. The Village des bories is open to visitors all year round and includes enclosures, wine vats and sheepfolds.

The caves of the Palais Saint Firmin are a huge semi-troglodytic site located beneath the town of Gordes that can now be explored by tourists. A veritable underground life was organised and dug out by man in the Middle Ages. Excavation work was carried out for more than 40 years, but it wasn't until 1999 that visitors were able to immerse themselves in the hidden history of Gordes and discover some of the archaeological remains dating back more than 700 years. This fascinating tour is open to all, with lighting effects and audio guides all year round, but must be booked in advance between October and April.
