Discover the Vienne

Once called the "city of a hundred steeples", Poitiers is the former capital of the Poitou-Charentes region. It has an important religious and architectural heritage, such as the church of Notre-Dame-la-Grande dating from the 11th and 12th centuries, with its sculpted façade. You should discover the light show that highlights the ancient facades of the building, every evening in summer. A moment not to be missed. Wander through the many narrow streets to the small squares and marvel at the architecture of the mansions and old houses. For those who love art, the Musée Sainte-Croix offers fine art collections and the Musée Rupert de Chièvres exhibits old paintings and decorative arts.

The second largest city in the Vienne after Poitiers, Châtellerault is a destination that attracts tourists thanks to its rich monuments, such as the Henri IV bridge dating from the 17th century, but also the Saint Jacques church, the Descartes house and the Sully hotel.

The medieval town of Chauvigny is an architectural treasure. As in Poitiers, you should walk through the charming streets and discover the 12th century Roman collegiate church and the five castles.

The spa town of La Roche-Posay is known for its treatment of skin diseases but it is also a small town that has kept the vestiges of its past such as the magnificent medieval keep and its machicolation gate. The beautiful gardens of the thermal park are also worth seeing.

About forty kilometres east of Poitiers, the abbey of Saint Savin is not to be missed during your stay in the Vienne. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this is the site of the largest collection of Romanesque frescoes in France. The paintings that cover the vault of the nave are a pure marvel.

Angles-sur-l'Anglin is classified as one of the most beautiful villages in France. There is a charming harmony here between its calm river, its medieval castle perched on a rocky outcrop and its pretty houses. A small town that has managed to preserve its medieval soul and which you will fall under the spell of.

It is difficult to talk about the Vienne without mentioning the Futuroscope Park. Located a few kilometres from Poitiers, it offers some forty fun and sensory attractions based on science and technology. Some of them have even won the prize for the best attraction in the world... A fun, unique experience for the whole family, full of surprises!

Finally, La Vallée des Singes is a wildlife park south of Poitiers where more than 350 primates of 30 different species live in semi-liberty. You can walk among the pygmy marmosets and other gorillas that live on vegetated islands and you will spend a pleasant moment with your family.
