Basilica of Notre Dame de la Garde

The Basilica of Notre Dame de la Garde dominates Marseille at a height of 154 metres, on the hill of La Garde, named for its former function as a lookout.

Visit Notre Dame de la Garde during your camping holiday

In 1853, the basilica was built to accommodate more pilgrims, on land that had seen two other churches in the eighteenth century. Notre Dame de la Garde quickly became a symbolic monument of primary importance for the people of Marseilles, who affectionately call her "the Good Mother", as she heals their prayers and eases their pain. The basilica also protects sailors going to sea, whose votive offerings can be seen hanging on the walls between the pillars of the nave.

Its Romanesque-Byzantine style (gilded domes, polychrome stones, gold and mosaics) is part of the construction programme undertaken in Marseille under Napoleon III. The interior of the church, a sanctuary dedicated to the Virgin Mary, is richly decorated: mosaics with a gold background, marble, bronze doors and the High Altar create a décor that recalls the riches of the East, sparkling even in the dark.

The view from Notre Dame de la Garde is quite exceptional. An extraordinary view of the whole city of Marseille and on one side the sea and the other the hills. Finally, you should know that the hill overhung by the basilica has been a listed site for 100 years.
